The SONG of the week comes from a band I would love to share with everyone: Alphonso Trent and his Orchestra.

I’ll spare you the long history of the Alphonso Trent which you can google for, But to keep it short the band was primarily out of Texas and was the toughest band to battle in the territories.

During the late 1920’s they toured the North east to record for the Gennett label in Indiana and on one of these tours played the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem.

Although they have numerous songs that are great I selected St. James Infirmary, Recorded March 5, 1930.

This high octane songs starts off with one strike to a Chime bell, like a Gun shot at the horse races, and then bust into a 8 bar intro, with the Robert “Eppie” Jackson on Tuba nailing all 4 for a bar before hitting the 2 bar break that is filled by Drummer A.G. Godley. Just that intro alone makes the hair on my neck stand up and search for a Lady to dance with…

The Songs Kicks off with a smoking Tuba in stomp time supplied Jackson with the band locking in behind. From the first beat we hear Eugene Cook on the Banjo cutting through and rhythmically filling all holes while adding amazing syncopated lines similar to a dancer.

The band simply packs a punch propelling the song forward in good time until Trombonist Leo “Snub” Moseley does a 16 bar teaser.

Stuff Smith comes in to sing a verse while getting answered vocally by the band. As he scream’s “Let her go”, the band Calls Back “Let her go” and after two responses Stuff Busts into a crazy and frantic vocal scat, with intensity rarely heard by Vocalist.

The band answers back to this insanity on their instruments as a well trained team, to which Smith answers back taking a solo this time with his Violin. This is Followed by Trumpeter Peanuts Holland who really kills it with his percussive style, all the while the band keeps the motor running hard. Lastly Leo “Snub” Mosley comes back in and really lays one out on his Trombone, with power unequaled for many years to come.

The song’s last chorus is the team coming together as if rounding the last corner coming home at the race track and Eugene’s lightning hand is the whip which brings the the whole band home with a insanely exciting finish.

Alphonso Trent Orchestra’s was known as the best dance band in the Territories, and this is their music…If this doesn’t make you get up off your ass and dance, you must be dead.

이번 주에 소개할 노래는 모두와 함께 나누고 싶은 밴드의 노래입니다.

여러분이 구글링하는 수고를 덜기 위해 Alphonso Trent 의 역사 이야기를 준비했어요.
좀 짧게 얘기하자면 이 밴드는 텍사스 출신이고 그 지역에서 가장 터프한 밴드였습니다.

1920년대 말에 그들은 인디애나의 Gennett 레이블과 레코딩작업을 하기위해 북동부 지역을 투어했고, 그 투어 중에는 할렘의 사보이 볼룸에서도 연주했었어요.

Robert “Eppie” Jackson 이 튜바를 한 bar에 4번 후려 불고 그 다음에는 드러머 A.G. Godley 가 2 bar의 브레이크를 차지합니다.

인트로만으로도 목에 난 털이 쭈뼛 서면서 춤 출 팔뤄를 찾게 되죠.

이 노래는 Jackson 의 stomp time 에 smoking Tuba 와 함께 시작합니다. 첫번째 비트부터 밴조의 Eugene Cook 이 커팅과 함께 빈 공간들을 리드미컬하게 메꾸는데 꼭 댄서의 싱코페이션 라인과 비슷합니다.

이 밴드는 트럼본의 Leo “Snub” Moseley 가 16 bar의 teaser를 가질 때까지 앞으로 전진하는 강한 추진력이 있습니다.

Stuff Smith 가 밴드에 대해 대답을 받는 식으로 노래를 하기 시작합니다.

그가 “Let her go” 라고 외치면 밴드가 “Let her go” 라고 응답하고 두번의 응답 후에, Stuff 는 흔하지 않은 격렬하고도 미친 듯한 보컬 스캣을 시작합니다.

밴드가 이 광기에 대해 하나의 팀으로써 그들의 악기로 응답하고, Smith 가 Violin 솔로 부문을 통해 다시 대답합니다.

Alphonso Trent Orchestra 는 그 지역에서 가장 뛰어난 dance band 로 알려졌었고 이것이 그들의 음악입니다. 만약 이 노래가 여러분 힙을 들고 춤추게 만들지 않는다면, 아마 당신은 죽은 사람일 겁니다.
