International Lindy Hop Championships 2008

When I heard that Tena (Morales), Nina (Gilkenson) and Sylvia (Sykes) were putting on an event in Washington D.C., there was no question of whether I would be attending.  I’ve been to events Tena has organized before and they are often some of the best run weekends.  Add Sylvia’s excellent career as head judge and Nina’s ability to bring people in with her joyful swivels and smile and you have the makings of an excellent event.

The International Lindy Hop Championships wrapped up late Sunday night to Peter Strom and Naomi Uyama’s soul jams when they began to take the floor apart from underneath us.  A fitting image for the whole event.  Attendees, whether competing or just there to dance, brought the energy to create a great event and it paid off.  The atmosphere was relatively relaxed on the social floor.  While competitors came prepared with solid performances and were received with great enthusiasm by the audience.

Watch ILHC 2008 videos

Great news! Our friends LindyLibrary and Andrew Thigpen have uploaded some videos of ILHC this past weekend.

Check them out on the LindyLibrary youtube channel and Andrew Thigpen’s channel.

In case you’ve never been on LindyLibrary, go there now! They have an amazing collection of high quality (DivX) video that you can download from past events such as the Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown, Camp Jitterbug, the now defunct Rhythmic Arts Festival and most recently the Lone Star Championships.

LindyLibrary, run by Jonathan Jow from Austin, Texas, aims to be the best online Lindy Hop and Swing resource in the world and has two main goals:
1. We want to help people make their videos available to other people.
2. We want to enable new ways of managing, dispersing, and archiving dance information.

Note: We’d like to apologize for the confusion this past week on youtube. We uploaded some videos by mistake, and had to take them down. Hence, they now appear as private. However, we’re continuing to upload our own footage as we find time. It’s great to have different angles for all the performances at ILHC. Subscribe to the Lindybloggers youtube channel to get our latest videos.

Marty Klempner and the Big Apple at ILHC 2008

A comprehensive review of the International Lindy Hop Championships will be up shortly. In the meantime, watch Marty Klempner in a bright red zoot suit truckin’ skating his way into the semi-finals in the Solo Charleston contest on Friday night.

For those who were at Camp Jitterbug in Seattle this past May, you probably remember Marty doing the same thing there in the Solo Charleston contest. This time around, we get both Marty and the Big Apple!
Note - this year Camp Jitterbug will be held a week after Memorial Day weekend in order to accomodate Frankie Manning’s 95th anniversary in New York City.

An Interview with Bethany Powell

A few months ago, I interviewed dancer Bethany Powell. Stefan Durham and Bethany are guest teachers at Cat’s Corner’s tenth anniversary in Montreal this October, and I thought it’d be nice to get more than just a regular teacher bio from her for the event. Here’s the interview. Enjoy.

1. What’s your story? How did you start dancing?

oh geezum.  i don’t want to bore anyone.  i’ll just say that swing dancing was already sort of passe when i started, sometime in 2001.  It was post-gap commericial and post-neo-swing fervor.  i’ll also say that initially i was drawn to this dance because it seemed so expressive and unassuming; it didn’t take itself too seriously.  for a long time - partly because of the type of music that was popular in my scene when i was learning - i thought i didn’t really like swing music and at best would have to tolerate it until i could build up some kind of scheme for subverting it.  later on i became exposed to a wider array of artists and was relieved to discover music that i felt profoundly connected to and inspired by and which is now some of my favorite music (e.g. Stuff Smith, Fats Waller, Cats and the Fiddle, Slim and Slam, Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Django Reinhardt).
